With the Canadians expected to be a strong candidate for gold in Vancouver in February, one Capitals star will get a chance to make the roster.
Hockey Canada announced the 46 candidates for its roster - which includes 16 defensemen - and not surprisingly, Norris Trophy-runner-up Mike Green is one of the invitees.
Green, a Calgary native, had a tremendous campaign this past year, leading all blueliners with 34 goals and adding 42 assists and was the runner-up to Zdeno Chara for the honor of being the league's top defenseman.
Should Green make the final squad, he would become the first Capital to represent Canada in the Olympics since the competition added NHL players in 1998.
The host Canadians are one of the favorites to medal, although the Russian squad - presumably that will be featuring Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and perhaps Simeon Varlamov - could be the big obstacle in their way.
The Canadian camp is being held August 24-27 in Calgary. USA Hockey, which announced its 34 camp invitees earlier this week, holds its camp outside of Chicago in mid-August.
