Ovechkin, Semin, Varlamov to Russian Camp

Like their North American counterparts, the Russian squad for the Vancouver Olympics is being assembled, and a group close to the final Olympic roster was announced, which includes three current - and two former - Capitals.

Not a surprise were the invitations extended to Alex Ovechkin - who was named an ambassador to the 2014 Sochi Olympics even before it's been determined if NHL players will participate - and Alexander Semin. Simeon Varlamov also was invited to be one of the three netminders based on his terrific playoff run, as he will battle with veterans Nikolai Khabiboulin and Evgeni Nabakov for time in the net.

Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov, who will spend next season in the KHL, also were part of the 23-man group that will gather in Moscow in late August.

Featuring all three of this year's Hart Trophy candidates, the Russian squad is expected to be a strong challenger for the gold medal. In 2006, the Russians ousted Canada in the quarterfinals in a terrific game, but fell in the semi-finals to Finland and lost the bronze medal to the Czechs into fourth place.
