Carlson the Hero as U.S. Ends Canada's Run

John Carlson ended one of the great runs in IIHF history, as his goal 4:21 into overtime gave the United States a 6-5 win for the gold medal at the World Junior Championships in Saskatoon.

The Caps' prospect scored on a 2-on-1 in the extra session to deny Canada a sixth straight gold medal in the tournament, and the U.S. earned its second first-place finish ever in the event. After a quick transition, the current Bears blueliner held the puck and released a quick shot into the cage to send his teammates into a euphoric celebration and leaving the host fans stunned.

The defenseman ended up with two goals in the final contest and four goals in seven games, as he finished the tourney strong as he heads back to a red-hot Hershey Bears team that has won 10 in a row.

It is the first triumph for the U.S. in the tournament since 2004, the last time Canada fell in a WJC final.
