First Period Re-Cap

The Capitals lead the Panthers 1-0 after one at Verizon Center. Nicklas Backstrom has the Capitals lone goal so far tonight on a power play goal.

Backstrom put home the rebound of a Mike Knuble backhand shot in tight. Backstrom actually poked the puck between Knubles legs as Knuble was searching for the rebound himself. Mike Green started the rush by skating into the high slot and feeding Knuble, who was cutting down the right wing.

Backstrom's goal came with 18 seconds remaining on the power play.

Michael Neuvirth made several key stops in the first period, the first coming 27 seconds into the game. Dominic Moore came in on a semi-breakaway after getting behind the Capitals defense, but hit the crossbar on a wrist shot.

Rostislav Olesz test Nevirth a little over a minute later, but Neuvirth forced Olesz to skate across the front of the net, thus nullifying his scoring attempt.
