The second period was much like the first in that the Red Wings outshot the Capitals, but this time it was only 16-11.
Each team scored once as the Red Wings got on the scoreboard at 4:17 on a fluky goal by Dan Cleary.
Theodore stopped Valtteri Filppula's initial shot and Cleary actually wiffed on the intial rebound, but the puck came out to the right off Theodore and Cleary did a 360 before taking a backhand shot that deflected in off of Theodore. It was the Wings 21st shot as they were outshooting the Capitals to that point 21-9.
The Capitals tied the game late on a pretty goal by Matt Bradley. Mike Green sent a cross-ice pass from the neutral zone to Boyd Gordon who was just inside the blue-line. Gordon then sent a pass to Bradley who was cutting through the slot.
Bradley fended off Detroits' Jonathan Ericsson and beat Osgood high to the glove side at 18:05. Osgood was actually going down when Bradley shot, but still managed to lightly tip the puck before it went in. It was the Capitals 14th shot of the game.
